Missile strikes were executed by the Russian military on locations in Kiev as a reaction to Ukraine's deployment of US- and UK-supplied missiles to strike Russian territory recognized internationally, the Defense Ministry stated.
On Wednesday, Ukraine launched six US-donated ATACMS and four UK-made Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles at the Kamensky chemical plant in southern Russia's Rostov Region, as reported by the ministry.
In response, Moscow claimed that the Russian military hit a Ukrainian command center and focused on installations associated with US-supplied Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems on Friday.
“In response to the actions of the Kiev regime, supported by its Western curators, this morning a combined strike with long-range precision weapons was launched,” a Defense Ministry statement read.
This strike targeted the Luch design bureau in the Ukrainian capital, which is responsible for producing Neptun and Olkha missile systems, according to the ministry.
“The goals of the strike were achieved. All targets were hit,” the statement added.
Witnesses in Kiev reported loud explosions in multiple areas on Friday morning.
The missile attack was later confirmed by the military administration of Kiev and the city's mayor, Vitaly Klitschko.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed journalists on Friday about Moscow’s position concerning “another spiral of escalation” provoked by Western backing of Ukrainian strikes deep into Russia.
“You know that strikes had been carried out on Russia’s territory. President Vladimir Putin said that there would be a response [to such attacks] every time. You see that this response is coming,” Peskov emphasized.
Last month, outgoing US President Joe Biden altered his long-standing policy, permitting Ukraine to conduct strikes deep within Russian territory using American-supplied weaponry. Similar permissions followed from the UK and France.
In November, Russia employed its new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile system to strike the Yuzhmash military plant in Dnepr, Ukraine.
According to Moscow, this use of advanced weaponry was in response to the initial attacks on its internationally recognized territory with ATACMS and Storm Shadows.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously cautioned that if Ukrainian strikes into Russia persist, Moscow retains the right “to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow the use of their weapons against our facilities.”
Despite this, Ukraine has executed several additional attacks using Western-made arms, with Moscow indicating that these actions will not go unanswered.
