Houthis Attack Central Israel
A missile originating from Yemen struck central Israel on Sunday morning, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The Houthis, an armed group that exerts control over much of northern Yemen, have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The IDF indicated that the missile entered Israeli airspace from the east and landed in an unpopulated area. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported from the incident.

In a subsequent update, the Israeli military confirmed that the missile attack came from Yemen. The IDF added that the explosive sounds heard over central Israel were due to its interceptors being deployed against the incoming missile.

Sirens were activated across the area stretching from Tel Aviv along the Mediterranean coast to Modiin, approximately 25 kilometers southeast, around 6:30 a.m. local time, as stated by the Times of Israel.

According to the report, the missile struck an open area, igniting a fire in the Ben Shemen forest, situated a few kilometers from Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv. Shrapnel also damaged a train station on Modiin's outskirts, prompting police to search for missile debris in the vicinity.

Israel's ambulance service, Magen David Adom, reported that nine people sustained minor injuries while seeking shelter during the assault.

A few hours later, the Houthis acknowledged their role in the missile strike, with the group’s spokesman announcing that “the Yemeni Armed Forces carried out a specific military operation” targeting “a military target of the Israeli enemy” in the Jaffa port area of Tel Aviv.

The spokesman asserted that the assault involved “a new hypersonic ballistic missile,” which successfully struck its designated target. He claimed, “The enemy’s defense systems failed to intercept and confront [the missile]. It crossed a distance of 2,040km in eleven and a half minutes, and caused a state of fear and panic” in Israel.

Since October of the previous year, the Houthis have been attacking merchant vessels allegedly linked to Israel in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden using drones and missiles, asserting that their actions support the Palestinians amid Israel’s operations in Gaza.

While the Yemeni group has targeted Israeli territory with drones and missiles, they have only managed to breach air defenses on a few occasions.

Saree warned that “the Israeli enemy should expect more strikes and specific operations” leading up to the first anniversary of the October 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian armed group Hamas, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and around 250 hostages taken.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, the IDF’s air campaign and ground operations, initiated in response to the Hamas attack, have led to the deaths of at least 41,206 people in the Palestinian enclave, with 95,337 others wounded.
