Hezbollah is prepared to confront the Israeli military if an invasion of Lebanon is attempted, according to the militant group’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem. This statement was made during his first public appearance following an Israeli airstrike that took the life of Hezbollah’s long-time chief, Hassan Nasrallah, on Friday.
In recent weeks, Israel has intensified its operations against Hezbollah, including bombings that have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,300 people in Lebanon, as reported by local health authorities.
On Monday, Qassem declared, “we are ready if the Israelis decide to enter by land and the resistance forces are ready for a ground engagement.”
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also addressed the situation on Monday, sharing a video on X showing a conversation with Israeli troops. The video was accompanied by a comment in Hebrew stating, “Together with the fighters of the 188th Brigade on the northern border – the forces are ready and prepared to strike Hezbollah with force.”
Gallant emphasized that Israel “will use all the means at our disposal” to ensure that its population can return to their homes in the northern regions.
In recent months, areas near the Lebanese border have increasingly been targeted by missile fire from Hezbollah militants.
According to an unnamed senior US official, ABC News reported on Saturday that the Israel Defense Forces is planning a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon soon.
During a speech to Israeli troops last Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi noted that recent airstrikes on Hezbollah targets were intended to prepare the area “for the possibility of your entry.” He asserted, “You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure.”
The Israeli Air Force has continued to conduct operations across Lebanon, and an apparent airstrike on Monday marked the first time since the 2006 war that central Beirut was hit, according to local reporters. The attack resulted in the deaths of three leaders from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a militant group confirmed.
