The incident, which took place on Sunday evening, was captured by nearby security cameras, and multiple local residents shared videos that appear to show the aftermath.
Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz reported that the R44 helicopter, privately owned, struck a radio tower in the Greater East End neighborhood just before 8 p.m. local time after departing from Ellington Field, roughly 24 kilometers away.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire noted the fortunate circumstances surrounding the tragedy, considering a gas tank and nearby residential buildings were in proximity to the crash site.
“The tower is surrounded by residents and that’s where we were very fortunate that it didn’t topple in one direction or another,” Whitmire stated. “The fireball was pretty much isolated.”
Following the collapse of the radio tower, a large fire ignited in a grass field, reportedly covering an area the size of two or three city blocks. Fire Department Chief Thomas Munoz indicated that emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene.
The Houston Fire Department received a call around 7:55 p.m. reporting that a helicopter had collided with the radio tower on Engelke Street near Ennis Street and Navigation Boulevard, leading to the fire in the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the crash.
