The three-day summit is set to take place in Kazan, Russia’s fifth-largest city, beginning on Tuesday. Lula was anticipated to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the event. Instead, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will represent Brazil.
“President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in accordance with medical advice, will not be traveling to the BRICS summit in Kazan due to a temporary impediment to long-distance flights,” his office stated in a brief announcement on Sunday. The statement also noted that Lula would participate in the summit via videoconference and plan to return to his usual schedule later in the week.
The 78-year-old leader was hospitalized after suffering an injury at his residence on Saturday, resulting in blunt trauma to the back of his head, according to a statement from the Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo. Local media reported he had slipped in his bathroom.
“After examination by the medical team, he was advised to avoid long-distance flights,” the hospital confirmed. Lula has since been discharged and is back home.
BRICS was initially established in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil to enhance trade and investment among member nations. The group has since expanded to nine members and broadened its discussions to include security and other global challenges.
“The BRICS have a unique chance to shape the trajectory of global development,” Lula remarked last year. “Our countries together represent a third of the world economy.”
