Biden withdrew from the race against Trump shortly after his own poor showing in June. The president, who reportedly could not recall if he reviewed his debate performance, watched Harris closely from a hotel in New York City with family and staff, according to a CNN source.
“America got to see tonight the leader I’ve been proud to work alongside for three and a half years. It wasn’t even close. VP Harris proved she’s the best choice to lead our nation forward. We’re not going back,” Biden tweeted late Tuesday.
During her debate with Harris, Trump launched numerous attacks on her superior, calling him an embarrassment on the national and global stage. “They respect me; they don't respect Biden. Why would you respect him, for what reason?” Trump questioned. “We are playing with WWIII, and we have a president that… Where is our president?”
“They threw him out of the campaign like a dog... We have a president that doesn’t even know he’s alive,” he added.
Harris responded by emphasizing that Trump was running against her, not Biden. However, Trump attempted to portray a possible Harris presidency as merely a continuation of Biden's term.
“Remember this: She is Biden,” Trump remarked. “She copied Biden’s plan. It’s like four sentences long: ‘Run, Spot, Run’ – just oh, we’ll try to lower taxes… She doesn’t have a plan.”
In his closing remarks, the former president questioned Harris’ previous accomplishments and the new commitments she made during the debate.
“She just started by saying she’s gonna do this, she’s gonna do that, she’s gonna do all these wonderful things… Why hasn’t she done it? She’s been there for three and a half years,” Trump stated.
“What these people have done to our country… they’re destroying our country. The worst president, the worst vice president in the history of our country,” he continued.
