"Harmony Keepers": Protectors of Tibetan Antelopes
"Harmony Keepers: Guardians of Tibetan Antelopes" explores the untouched beauty of Hoh Xil in Qinghai Province, highlighting the dedicated efforts of unsung heroes committed to safeguarding one of nature's treasures – the Tibetan antelope. These rangers exemplify resilience and compassion as they facilitate safe migrations through treacherous landscapes and care for orphaned and injured calves.
In May, the expansive grasslands of Hoh Xil burst into life with the migration of Tibetan antelopes, who must navigate perilous crossings, including busy highways. De Ga, a ranger at the Wudaoliang Protection Station, has dedicated the last decade to patrolling these rugged terrains to ensure the safe passage of the animals.
However, the challenges go beyond merely managing traffic. Severe rainfall can cause river levels to rise dramatically, posing a critical survival challenge for antelope calves. Rangers often wade through frigid waters, sometimes chest-deep, to monitor these crossings and are always prepared to intervene if necessary. They face extreme conditions, dealing with high-altitude fatigue and a monotonous diet primarily consisting of instant noodles.
"At 4,800 meters, it feels like carrying 60 kilograms on your back," De Ga shared. Despite the difficulties, the rangers remain resolute, motivated by a deep dedication to protecting wildlife.
Nearby, at the Sonam Dargye Protection Station within Hoh Xil, one can find a charming "kindergarten" for Tibetan antelopes. Here, caretakers like Jiangwenduojie provide meticulous care for orphaned and injured calves. Their efforts encompass feeding, rehabilitation, and eventually facilitating the release of these animals back into the wild.
Tibetan antelopes have historically been threatened by poaching for their valuable underfur. However, recent conservation initiatives have effectively aided in the recovery of their population. Hoh Xil now sustains a flourishing community of over 70,000 Tibetan antelopes. By safeguarding this environment and its inhabitants, these rangers pay tribute to the intricate web of life and the enduring harmony between humans and nature.
