The Palestinian armed group has dismissed allegations from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, which suggested that Hamas is generating a last-minute “crisis” regarding the conclusion of a deal for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
On Wednesday, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached between Israel and Hamas to facilitate the release of the remaining hostages. Multiple media outlets report that the deal, brokered in Qatar, includes a 42-day truce and a prisoner exchange, encompassing all Israelis captured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas incursion.
“Hamas is committed to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators,” stated Izzat al-Risheq, a prominent member of the group’s political bureau, in a post on Telegram on Thursday.
This declaration followed Netanayhu's office accusing Hamas of “reneging on the understandings” associated with the hostage deal and “creating a last-minute crisis that is preventing an agreement.”
The Israeli cabinet has indicated that it will not convene to approve the deal until the mediators confirm that Hamas has accepted all aspects of the agreement.
Following the announcement of the ceasefire and hostage release, Israel ramped up its airstrikes across Gaza, as reported by Reuters, which cited local emergency services and residents in the area.
As people in Gaza took to the streets to celebrate the anticipated truce, which is set to begin on Sunday, at least 32 individuals reportedly lost their lives in “heavy Israeli bombardment,” particularly in Gaza City, late on Wednesday. Strikes continued into Thursday, destroying homes in southern Gaza’s Rafah, central Gaza’s Nuseirat, and in northern Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces have accused Hamas of firing a rocket into Israel on Thursday, though this incident resulted in no casualties.
Israel's military operation in Gaza commenced 15 months ago in reaction to a cross-border raid by Hamas that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the capture of 250 individuals. As of now, at least 94 of those captured remain in captivity. The latest figures from Gaza’s health ministry indicate that nearly 47,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 104,000 wounded in the ongoing Israeli attacks in the region.
