USAID Attempted to Halt DOGE Audit
Elon Musk has accused the agency’s officials of seeking to “cover up their corruption.”

Two senior security officials at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have reportedly been placed on leave by the Trump administration after they attempted to prevent an audit by the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk leads through his roles at Tesla and SpaceX.

According to reports from AP, a team of DOGE inspectors tried to review “classified material in restricted areas” at USAID on Saturday but were thwarted by security officials. The inspectors were said to have lacked the necessary security clearance, and USAID security claimed they were “legally obligated” to deny them access to the requested documents.

Musk dismissed these claims, stating on X that, “No, they tried to lie to cover up their corruption.” Additionally, Katie Miller, a member of the DOGE advisory board, asserted that “no classified material was accessed without proper security clearances.”

Despite the initial setbacks, the inspectors eventually gained access to the requested materials, which included personnel records and “intelligence reports.” Meanwhile, the USAID officials, identified as John Vorhees and deputy Brian McGill, have been placed on leave.

Musk has also made serious allegations against USAID, claiming it has funded bioweapon research.

The DOGE has not yet released specific details about its review of USAID activities, but Musk has publicly criticized the agency in a series of posts over the weekend. He referred to USAID as “a criminal organization” and asserted, “Time for it to die,” accusing the agency of “paying media organizations to publish their propaganda” and allegedly using taxpayer dollars to finance “bioweapon research, including COVID-19, that killed millions of people.”

Amid these controversies, the official USAID website went offline, and its X account disappeared amidst speculation that the White House is considering merging the agency into the US Department of State.

The DOGE was established by Trump as a presidential advisory commission focused on reducing government spending, with an ambitious goal of cutting at least $1 trillion in federal spending by July 2026. In late January, the DOGE claimed to have already cut federal spending by about $1 billion each day, with significant savings attributed to the elimination of contracts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additionally, Musk’s department has received full access to the US Treasury Department’s payment system, a sensitive area previously limited to a small group of career civil servants.
