Hamas has extended its congratulations to the Syrian populace following the recent ousting of ex-President Bashar Assad by armed opposition forces in Syria over the weekend.
In a statement posted on the Palestinian militant group's Telegram channel, Hamas urged Syrians to “unite their ranks, further national cohesion and rise above the pains of the past.”
“We congratulate the brotherly Syrian people on their success in achieving their aspirations for freedom and justice,” the group declared, also stating that it honors the will, independence, and political decisions of the Syrian populace.
In a related statement, Ziad al-Nakhala, the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad—an ally of Hamas—voiced similar sentiments, expressing hope that Syria will continue to support the Palestinian cause.
Over the weekend, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham jihadists, alongside other anti-government factions, took control of the Syrian capital, Damascus, following a rapid advance in several areas. Opposition representatives have since claimed to have established authority over the country.
After engaging in negotiations with various conflict participants, Assad ultimately chose to resign and left the nation, advocating for a peaceful transition of power, as stated by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Both Assad and his family have been granted asylum and are currently in Moscow, confirmed by the Kremlin, which noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally invited the former Syrian leader to the country.
