In a recent interview with the Funke media group, she indicated that some Syrian refugees in Germany might need to consider returning to their homeland under specific circumstances.
These recommendations follow the recent developments surrounding President Bashar Assad's departure from Syria, triggered by a surprising offensive from militant factions, particularly those led by Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham, which rapidly dismantled the Syrian military and led to the government's collapse.
Faeser outlined a three-part approach: well-integrated refugees who contribute to society may be allowed to stay; those wanting to return will receive assistance; and individuals involved in criminal activities or extremism may face deportation as legal frameworks allow.
“As our law stipulates, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees will review and revoke protection grants if people no longer need this protection in Germany because the situation in Syria has stabilized,” she stated, as reported by Der Spiegel.
She also noted that the proposal involves rescinding protected status for individuals without other grounds for remaining in Germany, although those with residency based on work or education would be exempt.
Faeser emphasized the support for Syrians willing to return, while underscoring the urgency for the deportation of criminals and extremists. “We have greatly expanded the legal options for this and will use them as soon as the situation in Syria allows,” she mentioned.
According to Der Spiegel, nearly one-third of the approximately 975,000 refugees in Germany hold subsidiary protection status, which permits them to stay due to the ongoing civil war until conditions improve in Syria.
Additionally, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited Damascus on Friday to explore the feasibility of establishing an inclusive political process and ensuring human rights protections.
