Danish Survey: Just 6% of Greenlanders Favor Joining the US
Greenlanders are largely doubtful about the notion of US President Donald Trump buying their island from Denmark, according to local media reports on Tuesday, which referenced a new opinion poll. These findings sharply contrast with an earlier survey conducted by a lesser-known US-based firm.

Since his election victory in November, Trump has frequently mentioned the idea of acquiring Greenland for the US, alongside incorporating Canada and 'retaking' control of the Panama Canal. He has also claimed there is significant support for his proposals among Greenlanders.

Danish national daily Berlingske challenged this claim on Tuesday, referencing a study by the international polling firm Verian, which it co-commissioned with the Greenland-based newspaper Sermitsiaq.

Berlingske revealed that out of nearly 500 respondents surveyed, only 6% expressed support for joining the US. Meanwhile, 9% remained undecided, and a significant 85% rejected the idea altogether. Notably, 45% of those surveyed indicated that they see President Donald Trump’s interest in the island as a threat.

The article contrasted these results with an earlier survey suggesting that 57% of Greenlanders were in favor of US acquisition. This figure was reported by US-based Patriot Polling, which conducted its first survey outside the US earlier this month, though the firm did not provide details regarding its sample size or methodology.

Recently, Trump held a conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which reportedly was contentious and left the Danish side “utterly freaked out,” as stated by an anonymous source quoted by The Financial Times.

In light of the ongoing diplomatic tension—referred to by some Danish media as ‘The Battle for Greenland’—the Danish government has announced a new initiative aimed at combating racism and discrimination against Greenlanders. The plan includes nearly $5 million in funding over the next four years to strengthen Greenlandic identity and enhance connections with the mainland.
