Among those fired were prosecutors who had worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith, who conducted inquiries into Trump’s management of classified documents and alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Both inquiries resulted in criminal charges against Trump, who has pleaded not guilty. However, the cases were closed following his victory in the November election due to Justice Department policies preventing the prosecution of a sitting president.
Smith was appointed in 2022 to lead the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump. Despite Trump’s campaign promise to dismiss Smith “within two seconds” of taking office, Smith resigned prior to the president’s inauguration. The recent dismissals occur amidst Trump’s ongoing critiques of the Justice Department, which he has labeled as “weaponized” against him and his associates.
Critics of the firings have condemned them as detrimental to the independence of the Justice Department. Former US Attorney Joyce Vance labeled the move “anti-rule of law” and a threat to democracy.
On the other hand, supporters of the dismissals contend that the administration has the right to appoint officials who align with its policy objectives. Pam Bondi, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, has supported his assertions of politically driven investigations, asserting that the Justice Department was “weaponized for years.”
Many of the terminated prosecutors were career professionals specializing in corruption and national security matters. A department official informed CBS News that these individuals were considered unsuitable for their positions due to their involvement in prosecuting Trump.
This incident is part of a wider reorganization within the Justice Department, which has seen dozens of senior officials reassigned, with some now participating in a new task force aimed at enforcing immigration laws against sanctuary cities. Additionally, acting US Attorney Edward Martin has announced an internal examination of the previous administration’s charges against numerous Trump supporters involved in the January 6 Capitol protests.
