Ukraine ought to reclaim as much territory 'as possible' – Trump
Moscow has ruled out territorial concessions under a potential peace deal with Kiev.

US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for Ukraine to regain as much territory “as possible” in any potential peace accord with Russia. He stated that Moscow will need to make concessions, but emphasized that the resulting agreement should ultimately benefit both parties if it is finalized.

Since 2014, five regions that were previously part of Ukraine have voted to join Russia. While Kiev contests these territorial changes, Moscow considers them final and non-negotiable. Following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether a peace deal allowing Russia to maintain control over land claimed by Ukraine could convey a negative message to China regarding American interests.

”We’re going to do the best we can to make the best deal we can for both sides,” Trump replied, noting that for Kiev, the aim is “they can get as much back as possible.” Although he acknowledged that an agreement is not certain, Trump conveyed hope that it would come to fruition “for the sake of humanity.”

Should a resolution be achieved, Trump highlighted that Ukraine “can forget about” joining NATO, a key aspiration at the heart of the ongoing conflict. He also maintained that Russia will “have to” make concessions.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that Moscow would not accept a truce that merely freezes the conflict along the current front line, which would leave parts of Russian territory under Ukrainian authority.

”Some propose maintaining the line of engagement – this section is Russian, that one is Ukrainian… That won’t happen, as we have a Constitution reflecting the will of the people,” Lavrov noted, referencing the referendums conducted in the five former Ukrainian regions.

Trump’s strategy differs from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who focused on isolating Russia. The current approach aims to normalize bilateral relations, with both Moscow and Washington suggesting this shift could lead to a quicker resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Additionally, the Trump administration seeks to recover taxpayer funds expended during Biden’s administration through an upcoming minerals deal with Kiev, anticipated to be signed on Friday.

The new US administration has opted not to offer security guarantees to Ukraine, arguing that the country is of minimal interest to American priorities and that European nations should take the lead on addressing the situation.
