Exploring Zero-Carbon Parks: Understanding the Shift from Low Carbon to "Net-Zero Emissions"
During the Central Economic Work Conference in Beijing this December, one of the primary focuses was accelerating a comprehensive green transition and developing several zero-carbon parks. But what is a zero-carbon park?

A zero-carbon park is an area designed to achieve carbon neutrality through the integration of renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, and strategies for carbon offsetting. The objective is to balance carbon emissions by minimizing them and compensating for any residual emissions to ultimately achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

The development of zero-carbon parks occurs in three stages: low-carbon parks, near-zero-carbon parks, and finally, zero-carbon parks.

**Low-carbon park**

In low-carbon parks, carbon emissions are reduced by harnessing renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower, along with employing energy-efficient technologies. Despite these efforts, some emissions continue to exist at this stage.

**Near-zero carbon park**

These parks strive to bring emissions close to zero. They utilize advanced technologies, including distributed energy systems, multi-energy supply networks, and various carbon-reduction measures. While emissions are at a minimal level in this phase, a small portion may still require offsetting.

**Zero-carbon park**

In zero-carbon parks, all emissions are fully neutralized. These parks utilize a combination of energy sources, energy-saving technologies, and carbon capture methods. Approaches such as carbon capture and storage, coupled with extensive environmental restoration efforts, ensure that any remaining emissions are offset, achieving true net-zero carbon emissions.

This progression from low-carbon to zero-carbon parks offers a pathway for regions aiming to attain complete zero-carbon status.
