Eric Trump has shared a humorous meme that features his father, US President-elect Donald Trump, supposed to be purchasing entire regions on Amazon.
On Tuesday, Eric Trump posted on X showcasing an imagined Amazon Prime “shopping cart” filled with Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, humorously noting a “free delivery” option. He captioned the meme with the phrase: “We’re so back!”
This playful post comes on the heels of his father's controversial statements regarding the three regions and potential plans related to them when he returns to the White House in late January. Recently, the president-elect revisited a proposal he initially made during his first term, suggesting that the U.S. might buy Greenland from Denmark, which has governed the territory for over 300 years. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized the need for the U.S. to acquire the autonomous territory “for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world.”
Additionally, Trump indicated in a post on Saturday that Washington might pursue reclaiming control over the Panama Canal, a vital waterway that facilitates about 5% of global trade, should Panama continue to impose “exorbitant” fees on U.S. vessels. He criticized the decision to hand over complete control of the canal to Panama in 1999 as unwise.
Earlier this month, Trump also suggested that Canada should join the U.S. as its 51st state. This comment reportedly arose during a dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where Trudeau attempted to dissuade Trump from imposing tariffs on Canada in retaliation for its failure to curb illegal migration and drug flow across the border. Trump echoed this sentiment in a post last week, stating, “I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”
According to the New York Post, Trump’s aides and allies believe he is serious about buying Greenland and possibly reclaiming the Panama Canal. One source close to Trump asserted, “The president is 100% serious,” while another noted that he believes “empires that don’t grow start to fail” and “favors past presidents who were expansionist on the continent.”
However, authorities in both Panama and Greenland have reacted negatively to Trump’s expansionist remarks. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, firmly rejected any potential deal with Trump, declaring, “is ours” and “not for sale,” as reported by AFP. Meanwhile, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino also dismissed Trump’s threats in a video address on Sunday, insisting that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belongs to Panama, and it will continue to be so.”
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau has yet to publicly respond to Trump’s notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, but other officials have largely downplayed the remarks. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre stated last week that Canada will “never” become part of the U.S., a sentiment echoed by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
