Luigi Mangione enters not guilty plea for the murder of CEO
Luigi Mangione, the American man charged with the murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in a New York court on Monday, entering a plea of not guilty.

Mangione faces an array of state and federal charges, including first-degree murder classified as an act of terrorism. Should he be found guilty on all counts, he could potentially receive the death penalty.

“In its most basic terms, this was a killing that was intended to evoke terror,” stated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg last week.

Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, contended that her client is “being prejudiced by some statements that are being made by government officials.” She further accused New York Mayor Eric Adams and the police of utilizing Mangione as “political fodder.”

On December 4, Thompson was shot and killed outside a Manhattan hotel. At the crime scene, investigators discovered shell casings and bullets inscribed with the words “deny,” “depose,” and “delay,” which seemingly referenced the practice of denying health insurance claims.

Several days later, Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altona, Pennsylvania, after a customer recognized him from police-released images. The NYPD reported that Mangione possessed a firearm and suppressor “consistent with the weapon used in the murder.”

A manifesto allegedly linked to Mangione and disseminated by the media condemns UnitedHealth and the broader American healthcare system for being plagued by “corruption and greed.”

This case has sparked renewed public discussion about the exploitative tactics of health insurers in the United States and the effects on patients. Some officials have voiced concerns regarding the acclaim and sympathy Mangione has garnered on social media.
