Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that he would “bury” Kurdish militants in Syria should they refuse to surrender their weapons. This warning was directed at the People’s Protection Units operating along the border with Turkey.
While addressing lawmakers in Ankara on Wednesday, Erdogan committed to “eradicate the terrorist organization that is trying to weave a wall of blood between us and our Kurdish siblings.”
He asserted, “The separatist murderers will either bid farewell to their weapons, or they will be buried in Syrian lands along with their weapons,” as reported by Reuters.
Erdogan has consistently voiced concerns that the YPG represents a formidable threat to Turkish security and has pledged to thwart the creation of a “terror corridor” near Turkey’s southern borders. He criticized the United States for its provision of weapons and training to the YPG, which Ankara considers a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Türkiye deems both groups as terrorist organizations.
Previously, the Turkish leader has called on the US, its NATO ally, to reconsider its support for the YPG, urging partners to choose between supporting Türkiye or backing Kurdish militants.
The YPG's involvement in the US-led offensive against the Islamic State terrorist group has been cited by Washington as a rationale for its assistance, with American officials underscoring the group's role in dismantling IS control in Syria. Kurds in Syria have long sought increased autonomy, with YPG leaders claiming their objectives differ from the PKK’s armed insurrection in Türkiye.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, with the YPG as a central component, have also advocated for a nationwide ceasefire in the conflict-ridden country, particularly following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. The SDF has called for the safeguarding of Syrian territory from Turkish incursions and an end to what they describe as Ankara’s occupation of northern regions, insisting that the future of Syria should be determined by its own people without external interference.
Additionally, Türkiye has begun to strengthen its relationship with the new leadership in Damascus. Reports suggest Ankara is contemplating a collaborative military operation with Syria against Kurdish factions to address mutual security concerns.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently visited Damascus, where he advocated for the lifting of international sanctions that have severely impacted the Syrian economy. This outreach aligns with Erdogan's anticipated visit, indicating a significant change in Türkiye's stance toward its southern neighbor. Erdogan has stressed the importance of cooperation with Syria's government to secure long-term stability and security for both nations.
