Director of Hellboy Criticizes AI
Guillermo Del Toro has expressed skepticism about the utility of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, indicating its potential is greatly overestimated. At the BFI London Film Festival, while discussing his views, Del Toro, known for directing acclaimed films like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, reiterated his stance on AI's role in the creative process.

"AI has demonstrated that it can do semi-compelling screensavers. That’s essentially that," Del Toro remarked during the event. He emphasized that AI-generated art lacks the depth to evoke deep, human emotions, unlike artworks created by individuals.

"The value of art is not how much it costs and how little effort it requires, it’s how much would you risk to be in its presence? How much would people pay for those screensavers? Are they going to make them cry because they lost a son? A mother? Because they misspent their youth? F*ck no," Del Toro added.

The acclaimed director is among many in Hollywood who view AI as a potentially harmful development that could encroach on creative roles. This sentiment was a significant factor in last year's industry-wide discussions and strikes, which involved screenwriters and actors pushing back against AI in scriptwriting and performance roles. These actions ultimately led to the creation of guidelines governing AI use in visual media.

The debate on AI continues, with ethical and practical concerns at the forefront. Recent data from Arize AI, reported by the Financial Times, suggests that a majority of America's biggest corporations now consider AI a risk factor, with this perspective having increased significantly over the past year. Notably, within the entertainment sector, companies like Netflix and Disney are increasingly wary of AI's rapid advancement and its implications for the industry.
