Titled ‘RT.Doc: The Age of Our Heroes,’ the festival is scheduled for November 22-24 in Drvengrad, a traditional village originally constructed by Kusturica as a film set. This location has evolved into a distinctive cultural hub. At the festival, RTN plans to present five documentaries, with more than 60 additional titles set to be screened, including works from Italian, French, and US filmmakers.
In addition to the films, a round table discussion on “cancel culture” will take place during the festival. Kusturica and Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, the Russian ambassador to Serbia, may engage in discussions concerning the pressure Belgrade has experienced over its support for Moscow, as well as the broader attempts to undermine Russian culture.
Among the featured documentaries is RT’s ‘I’m Alive,’ which comprises interviews with Mariupol residents detailing alleged atrocities committed by Ukrainian troops. Another film scheduled to be shown is ‘Russophobia: History of Hatred.’
Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to watch ‘Bosnian Rift: A Glance from Republika Srpska,’ a documentary that delves into the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
Simonyan has expressed her appreciation for Kusturica's hospitality leading up to the event. She highlighted the bravery of the filmmakers, whose works will be displayed in Serbia, noting that they risk their lives to ensure that “people the world over can see the truth, not even our truth, but rather the truth in general, because, as we know, there is always only one truth.”
A Serbian documentary directed by Kusturica, titled ‘Christ’s People: These Days,’ will also be featured at the festival. This film addresses the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has historically maintained close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.
During the premiere of the documentary in Belgrade last September, Kusturica accused the West of attempting “to kill God” in people, claiming it has succeeded in Ukraine. He further alleged that Western elites have long considered Orthodoxy as the “number one enemy in the world.”
Last year's RT documentary festival was held in Ankara, Turkey.
