Russia's largest film studio has contributed dozens of its Soviet-era tanks, previously used as film props, to Russian military forces, as stated by the studio's CEO during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
According to its website, Mosfilm possesses a sizable collection of military vehicles and artillery, some of which are "disguised" to resemble foreign equipment.
During the Wednesday meeting held at the Kremlin, Mosfilm CEO Karen Shakhnazarov, a well-known Soviet and Russian filmmaker, informed Putin that the studio had opted to share part of its inventory with the Defense Ministry.
“I became aware that there was a need, and had contacted the Defense Ministry. They took the vehicles,” Shakhnazarov told Putin.
The filmmaker reported that last year, the studio offered 28 T-55 medium tanks, eight PT-76 amphibious tanks, six BMP armored vehicles, and eight undisclosed recovery vehicles. He did not elaborate on how the equipment would be utilized.
Mosfilm also allocated 6 million rubles “for the needs of the special military operation in Ukraine in 2024,” the CEO mentioned.
Established in 1924 in the Soviet Union, Mosfilm rapidly rose to prominence as the country's leading production company and continues to be one of the largest studios in Europe.
The studio has created over 2,500 feature films and documentaries, including notable works such as ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears’, both of which received Oscars for best foreign-language film in 1968 and 1980, respectively.
