According to the Danish state broadcaster DR News, Donald Trump Jr. and his team allegedly bribed homeless and socially vulnerable individuals in Greenland to participate in a ‘MAGA’ group video and be photographed during a recent visit to the island.
Trump Jr. arrived in Greenland on Tuesday for what he described as a “personal day trip,” with no scheduled meetings with government officials. This visit came after President-elect Donald Trump expressed his desire to acquire the Danish-controlled territory.
Following the trip, the younger Trump posted on X images of himself with individuals wearing the recognizable red ‘MAGA’ caps, stating, “Greenland loves America and Trump.” A video clip featured people dining with Trump Jr. at the Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk, the capital city, where they shared their hopes for the island to become part of the United States.
DR News later reported that the individuals filmed in the video were offered free meals in exchange for participating in this promotional event.
The news outlet spoke with several residents in Nuuk who recognized some members of the group as being homeless.
“All they have to do is put on a cap and be in the Trump staff’s videos,” one local resident claimed. “They are being bribed, and it is deeply distasteful,” the resident added.
Additionally, several employees at the local Brugseni Nuuk store confirmed that Trump Jr.’s team went around the street in front of the store, distributing MAGA caps and inviting individuals to a complimentary lunch at the hotel.
The incoming president has emphasized his desire to acquire Greenland, referring to the island as an “absolute necessity” for U.S. national security and suggesting he would not rule out using military force or economic measures to achieve this goal.
As the world’s largest island situated between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, Greenland currently hosts a significant U.S. military base. It was granted home rule by Denmark after a referendum in 1979. However, Greenland’s government has vigorously rejected Trump’s proposals, labeling them as “an absurd idea,” with Denmark also opposing the notion.
