The Cuban Energy Ministry announced that the “failure” of the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant led to “the total disconnection of the National Electrical System,” via a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel emphasized that restoring the grid was an “absolute priority” for the authorities, asserting that “there won’t be any rest” until power is fully regained.
Numerous videos and photos circulating online depict life on the island coming to a standstill, with the blackout impacting both public institutions and businesses.
The widespread power outages began on Thursday evening, prompting Prime Minister Manuel Marrero to address the nation in a televised speech. However, the broadcast faced “technical troubles” and was delayed in going online.
In his remarks, Marrero predominantly attributed the energy crisis to the “intensification of the economic war and the financial and energy persecution by the United States.” He pointed out that such restrictions have impeded fuel imports and disrupted the flow of necessary resources to maintain the electrical sector.
Cuba has long struggled with energy supply issues, having faced rolling blackouts for several months due to aging energy infrastructure and a declining external fuel supply.
Additionally, a fire in 2022 at the Matanzas oil storage facility exacerbated the nation's energy predicament. The fire, which lasted for five days, was ignited by an explosion caused by a lightning strike and resulted in the destruction of around 40% of the country's primary oil storage facility.
