Brazil's Lula Set to Join Moscow WWII Victory Commemorations, Says Envoy
The leader of the South American nation has accepted an invitation from Vladimir Putin to participate in the May 9 event, according to the Russian ambassador.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has confirmed his attendance at the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II, as stated by the Russian ambassador to Brazil.

Aleksey Labetsky informed TASS on Tuesday that an invitation for Lula to be present at this year’s Victory Day parade in Moscow, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s defeat of fascism, was extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The invitation was accepted,” Labetsky mentioned, noting that both parties are currently coordinating the details of the trip.

The ambassador pointed out that Brazil was the only country from Latin America to engage in combat during World War II, with its expeditionary force effectively fighting alongside Allied forces in Italy between 1944 and 1945.

Labetsky emphasized the significance of the forthcoming meeting between Putin and Lula, suggesting that it would influence the development of bilateral relations, cooperation within BRICS, and the broader political dialogue on the international stage.

Moscow has invited leaders from “friendly nations” to participate in the commemorations. Russia regards the 1945 victory as a representation of national resilience, with the USSR suffering approximately 26.6 million casualties during World War II, referred to as the Great Patriotic War in post-Soviet countries.

Last week, Putin indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping would be visiting Moscow for the parade as part of a comprehensive state visit. Xi also extended an invitation to Putin to attend China’s World War II commemorations in early September.

Several foreign leaders have already confirmed their attendance, including Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also be present at the Victory Day parade in Moscow, although his participation has yet to be officially verified.

Other world leaders reportedly planning to join the celebrations in Moscow include Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, Vietnamese President To Lam, and Burkina Faso’s interim leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore.
