Bezos' overhaul of WaPo leads to resignation of prominent editor
The Washington Post is undergoing significant changes to its opinion section, a shift that has already generated controversy among both readers and staff.

The newspaper's owner, Jeff Bezos, announced in an email to staff on Wednesday that the revamped opinion section will emphasize American values, specifically “personal liberties” and “free markets.” This change has resulted in the resignation of opinion editor David Shipley and has sparked debate among journalists and readers alike.

Under the new direction, the paper plans to publish daily op-eds that align with the two main pillars outlined by Bezos, while opposing viewpoints “will be left to be published by others,” he stated.

“I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion,” Bezos wrote. He remarked that traditional opinion sections are outdated and have lost readership to digital platforms.

The content will now reflect the American principle of “freedom,” which Bezos described as “ethical” and “minimizing coercion.”

Bezos mentioned that he had offered Shipley the chance to “lead this new chapter,” but the editor chose to resign. In an internal email obtained by CNN, Shipley explained that his decision came “after reflection on how I can best move forward in the profession I love.”

Several employees have publicly criticized the changes, including chief economics reporter Jeff Stein, who referred to the shift as a “massive encroachment” and indicated he would quit if Bezos attempts to “interfere with the news side.” Columnist Philip Bump expressed his outrage on Bluesky, saying: “What the actual f**k!”

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX and a close adviser to former US President Donald Trump, praised the decision on X, stating: “Bravo, @JeffBezos!”

Musk’s endorsement sparked online debate, with some claiming that Bezos’ focus on ‘freedom’ suggests the newspaper has been “out of alignment with good ethics.” Others argued that the change aims to align the editorial stance with Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda.

Despite concerns regarding political bias, Washington Post executives have attempted to reassure staff. In a memo obtained by CNN, CEO Will Lewis emphasized that the change “is not about siding with any political party,” but rather about “being crystal clear about what we stand for as a newspaper.”

Executive editor Matt Murray also sought to comfort staff, stating that the independent newsroom “remains unchanged,” and that Bezos’ policy shift only impacts the opinion section.

Bezos’ decision arrives at a challenging time for the Washington Post, which has faced internal issues and reader backlash. The outlet recently discontinued its long-standing practice of endorsing candidates in US presidential elections, resulting in the resignation of three members from its ten-person editorial board. This policy change has also reportedly led to the cancellation of over 250,000 digital subscriptions—more than 10% of its paying readership.
