Conor McGregor Unveils Intentions to Run for Irish President
The mixed martial arts fighter has indicated that he would compel Ireland's lawmakers to justify their actions to the public.

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor has hinted at a potential presidential run in Ireland next year, branding himself as “the only logical choice” for the position. He has vowed to “summon” politicians in the country to “answer to the people of Ireland.”

In a Thursday post on X, McGregor mentioned that he would leverage the limited powers of the Irish presidency to scrutinize lawmakers, whom he referred to as “thieves of the working man” and “disrupters of the family unit.”

“As president I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it,” he wrote, using the Irish-language term for the country’s parliament. “These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland and I would have it done by day end. Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely.”

“This would be my power as president… Ireland needs an active president employed wholly by the people of Ireland,” he continued. “It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming…”

Ireland’s incumbent president, Michael D. Higgins, a respected academic and linguist, was elected in 2011 and is approaching the conclusion of his second and final term. While no official candidates have entered the race to succeed Higgins yet, potential contenders include former prime ministers Bertie Ahern and Enda Kenny, as well as ex-Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams. The election is slated for late October 2025.

Last year, McGregor became a prominent figure for the politically unrepresented Irish right wing when he criticized the country’s immigration policy following a violent incident involving a foreign-born man who stabbed three children outside a Dublin school. McGregor described the suspect as “a grave danger among us in Ireland that should never be here in the first place” and faced accusations from the Irish government of inciting a wave of rioting and arson that erupted after the stabbings.

In the weeks following this incident, McGregor signaled a potential presidential bid, branding himself as “young, active, passionate, fresh skin in the game.” His announcement attracted significant international attention, including from X owner Elon Musk. However, the topic lost momentum this year as McGregor focused on preparing for his return to the octagon.

His highly anticipated welterweight bout with American Michael Chandler was canceled in July due to McGregor breaking his toe. With a rescheduled fight reportedly in the works, he has been active on social media promoting his brands and engaging in discussions about Irish politics.

Recently, after the Irish Times disclosed that the government allocated €336,000 in taxpayer funds for a bike shelter accommodating 18 bicycles outside parliament buildings, McGregor took to X to express his outrage at the “greedy and corrupted bunch of chancers” who approved the project, asserting that if he were president, the plan would have been “tor[n] apart on the spot.”

To enter the presidential race, McGregor would need nominations from 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Given that parliament and local councils are largely dominated by the parties of Ahern, Kenny, and Adams, it remains uncertain whether he could secure the necessary support.
