Trump responds to Putin's support for Harris
The Republican presidential candidate has expressed uncertainty about whether he should feel insulted or grateful.

US Republican candidate Donald Trump stated on Thursday that he was uncertain about his feelings regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin's remarks expressing a preference for his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, in the upcoming presidential election.

Putin made his comments earlier that day at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, where he indicated that Moscow would prefer Harris to win the presidential election in November. He noted that he admired her “infectious laugh” and respected President Joe Biden’s decision to endorse her as his successor.

“He [Putin] endorsed Kamala, and I didn’t know if I was supposed to call him up and say, ‘Thank you very much’ … I don’t know exactly what to say about it. I don’t know if I’m insulted or he did me a favor,” Trump remarked during an event at the Economic Club of New York.

US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby responded by emphasizing that the Russian president should avoid commenting on the US presidential election.

Putin's statements were a reply to a question during the forum regarding whether he had a preferred candidate now that Joe Biden, who he had previously shown a preference for, has exited the race.

Putin stated that it is not Russia's role to select a “favorite” in the election, which he believes is up to American voters. He also reiterated Moscow's consistent dismissal of allegations from Washington about interference in US elections.

Regarding Harris, Putin suggested that her positive demeanor might lead her to impose fewer sanctions on Russia compared to Trump, who he said had enacted more restrictions on Moscow than any previous US president at the time.

“In the end, the choice is up to the American people, and we will treat their eventual decision with respect,” Putin concluded.
