Concerns of 'Sabotage' at German Military Base, Reports Der Spiegel
A military base in Cologne, Germany, was put on lockdown Wednesday due to concerns about a potential sabotage attempt, as reported by Der Spiegel. The German Defense Ministry confirmed that security services are now conducting an investigation.

In recent months, various Western media sources and officials have claimed that Russia has intensified efforts to carry out sabotage operations within Europe. The suspected aim of these actions is to disrupt the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine and the training of Ukrainian troops abroad.

Moscow has consistently dismissed these claims as "not serious" and "unfounded."

Der Spiegel's report indicated that the Bundeswehr barracks were entirely sealed off, with police and military counter-intelligence examining a suspected case of unauthorized entry.

The article suggests that there are concerns about possible contamination of the water supply at the military facility, referencing alleged internal instructions issued to personnel advising them against using water from the base's utility system.

Personnel at the base were reportedly told to remain vigilant for any unknown individuals and to report “suspicious behavior” observed on site. Der Spiegel speculated that security services might be conducting searches for potential saboteurs, as an unidentified person was allegedly seen near the base's fence before fleeing the scene.

Further, an investigation by military police revealed an opening in the fence surrounding the complex.

Recently, there have been reports of gastrointestinal illnesses among base personnel, although it remains unclear if these cases are connected to the water supply issues.

The Cologne barracks serve as the station for several Bundeswehr command units, and the German Air Force is also located on site, with Cologne Airport nearby. According to estimates, about 5,500 military and civilian personnel are employed at the facility.

Additionally, the base functions as a crucial hub for Ukrainian soldiers returning to their home country after receiving military training in Europe.

In April, the German Prosecutor General's Office announced the arrest of two dual German-Russian nationals on suspicion of planning to sabotage local military infrastructure. Around the same time, Thomas Haldenwang, head of German domestic intelligence, cautioned that the threat of sabotage acts had "significantly increased" in Germany.
