China Railway Initiates Trial Run for Rail Transportation of EV Batteries
China Railway has successfully completed its inaugural large-scale trial for transporting lithium batteries intended for electric vehicles (EVs).
On Tuesday, three trains packed with lithium batteries set off from Chongqing Municipality, along with locations in Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces, all situated in southwest China.
As the world's leading producer of lithium batteries, this initiative marks a significant advancement in their transportation, given that these batteries, categorized as dangerous goods, were previously transported exclusively by sea or road.
Transporting lithium batteries presents safety concerns due to their potential to burn or explode when subjected to impact.
"For the trial run, we are using a new type of container designed solely for the transport of lithium batteries. The containers are made of non-combustible materials and equipped with smoke and temperature detectors and venting devices," stated Jia Ping, deputy general manager of China Railway Chengdu Group Co., Ltd.
According to Jia, rail transport will enhance the export capabilities of Chinese lithium batteries, offering greater capacity than road transport and speedier options than sea transport.
The trial has been positively received by Chinese battery giant CATL. "This trial rail transportation is further recognition of the safety performance of domestic lithium batteries," remarked Liu Jie, who oversees CATL's supply chains and logistics.
"Rail transport opens up a new channel for the efficient transportation of lithium batteries. It will boost our exports by reducing logistics costs and improving logistics efficiency," Liu added.
