China boasts more than 17,000 5G and industrial internet initiatives spanning across 41 different sectors.
5G+ industrial internet involves the use of advanced information and communication technologies, notably 5G, to create new infrastructures, application models, and industrial ecosystems that are closely intertwined with the industrial economy. This technology fosters extensive connectivity among people, machines, objects, and systems.
According to the China Academy of Industrial Internet, the core industrial internet sector in China achieved a value-added output of 1.53 trillion yuan in 2024, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.65 percent and accounting for 3.81 percent of the national GDP. These milestones underscore the sector's steady advancement and its crucial contribution to the nation's economy.
In 2024, ten provinces and cities reported value-added outputs in their industrial internet core industries exceeding 50 billion yuan, with Guangdong, Jiangsu, Beijing, and Zhejiang each surpassing the 100-billion-yuan threshold, as indicated in a report from the China Academy of Industrial Internet that outlines the economic development of China's industrial internet sector in 2024.
The swift merging of industrial internet technologies with traditional industries has transformed manufacturing, resulting in smarter equipment and enhanced production efficiency. Local governments have played a significant role in this process by fostering connections between industries and financial resources, urging financial institutions and investment funds to back 5G+ industrial internet and 5G factory initiatives.
Moreover, the China Academy of Industrial Internet noted that 15 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities recorded industrial internet growth rates greater than 7 percent in 2024, providing robust support for regional economic development.
