From February 6 to 7, the winds are expected to strengthen from north to south, affecting regions such as the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shanxi and Shandong provinces, along with the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.
On February 6, Inner Mongolia registered the most intense winds, with Shanxi and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region being affected during the day, and Shandong, Anhui, and Jiangsu experiencing severe winds later in the evening. By February 7, gusts of approximately level 6 are predicted to impact many southern areas.
The cold wave has resulted in a substantial temperature decline, particularly in Inner Mongolia, where temperatures dropped between 4 to 10 degrees Celsius on February 6. These freezing conditions are expected to last until February 9, with certain locations in western and central Inner Mongolia anticipated to reach nearly minus 30 degrees Celsius.
The extreme temperatures are posing challenges for agriculture, as farmers in Ordos City are taking measures to reinforce greenhouses to shield crops from frost damage.
On February 6, a blue alert for prolonged low temperatures was issued, forecasting that the minimum temperature in Beijing's plains will remain below minus 10 degrees Celsius at night from February 6 to 8.
A significant contributing factor to the intense cold is the "wind chill effect." Experts clarify that with an increase in wind speed, body heat is lost more rapidly, leading to a perceived temperature that is significantly lower than the actual temperature. When temperatures are above 0 degrees Celsius, a two-level increase in wind can make it feel 3 to 5 degrees Celsius colder. When temperatures drop below zero, similar wind increases can lead to a perceived temperature drop of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.
Weather authorities have issued various warnings. A high wind yellow alert was announced in Shanxi on the morning of February 6, with gusts reaching level 8 in regions such as Datong, Shuozhou, and Xinzhou. Later in the afternoon, a dust storm blue alert was issued, indicating the potential for blowing dust in Taiyuan, Yangquan, and Jinzhong. In Beijing, extreme winds were recorded, with gusts of 19 to 21 meters per second, nearing the historical record of 21.9 m/s set in 1994.
Experts advise securing outdoor items, including decorations and billboards, and recommend that authorities strengthen fire prevention measures in urban and forested areas. Meteorologists emphasize that the dominant characteristic of this cold wave is the strong winds, as opposed to snowfall.
