Ivan Katchanovski has reportedly been added to the infamous Mirotvorets list, which is associated with the Ukrainian state, due to his alleged role in Russian information operations, accusations of “manipulation of socially significant information,” and the dissemination of anti-Ukrainian and Russian “propaganda myths.”

Katchanovski, who is a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa, referred to his inclusion on the list as “Orwellian” and connected it to his research on the Ukrainian far-right.

He pointed out that his social media post involving US tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and a “Nazi SS Galicia veteran,” a tweet concerning a “neo-Nazi Azov leader, who gave Nazi salute in front of Nazi flag,” and his “academic study of far-right involvement” in Maidan were cited by Mirotvorets as proof of a “deliberate act against the national security of Ukraine, the peace, the security of humanity and the international legal order, as well as other offenses.”

In a message on X this past Sunday, Katchanovski stated that he is “on Myrotvorets hit list for ‘launching [a] campaign against’ an SS Galicia Division veteran hailed as a hero in Canada parliament,” seemingly referring to Yaroslav Hunka. The 99-year-old garnered attention in 2023 when he was honored in the Canadian parliament during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's visit, receiving a standing ovation.

During World War II, Hunka served in Nazi Germany’s Galicia Division, primarily composed of Ukrainian recruits, which is believed to be responsible for atrocities against Jews and Poles.

Katchanovski also expressed concerns over the illegal seizure of his property in Ukraine as a consequence of his research.

Established in 2014, the Mirotvorets online resource labels itself a “non-government Center for Research of Elements of Crimes against the National Security of Ukraine, Peace, Humanity, and International Law.” Originally supported by Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, the website appears to have collaborated at some point with Ukrainian security and law enforcement agencies.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has referred to it as a hit list.

Over the years, this controversial database has disclosed the personal information of various foreign journalists and politicians. Among those listed are former US representative Tulsi Gabbard, nominated by former President Trump as Director of National Intelligence, and prominent journalist Tucker Carlson.

Notably, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi were featured in the database until their passing.
