Global energy initiatives, encompassing Arctic projects, are reportedly being discussed as Russia and the US engage in “preliminary” communication.

Bloomberg: US considers Arctic collaboration with Gazprom
Moscow and Washington are in "preliminary" contact regarding global energy projects, according to reports from the news agency.

Recent discussions between Moscow and Washington have centered around potential collaboration with Gazprom on international projects, particularly in the Arctic region, as reported by Bloomberg on Thursday, citing Russian and European officials. This development comes as the United States is working to normalize relations with Russia and secure access to the economically significant Arctic.

The Arctic has garnered global interest for its extensive untapped energy and mineral reserves, as well as its strategic trade routes. Russia has been actively developing its Northern Sea Route, which serves as the shortest shipping pathway between Western Eurasia and the Asia-Pacific, traversing its Arctic and Far East regions. Over recent years, significant investments, particularly from India and China, have modernized this route, as they hold stakes in various Arctic energy ventures.

According to one source cited by Bloomberg, Gazprom might offer the US participation in Arctic ventures and other offshore initiatives, like the Sakhalin liquefied natural gas project, should sanctions limiting foreign investment be lifted.

Sources with knowledge of the discussions indicated that the negotiations between US and Russian representatives regarding potential collaboration with Gazprom are still at the stage of "preliminary contacts." It remains uncertain who is leading these discussions or whether officials from President Donald Trump's administration are directly engaged.

In addition to Arctic projects, US-Gazprom cooperation could encompass joint initiatives in Europe and Asia, as multiple sources have suggested. This move could be part of a broader Washington strategy to diminish Russia's connections with China and Iran. Bloomberg also highlighted that such cooperation might open business opportunities following a peace agreement to resolve the Ukraine conflict, which Trump considers a key priority.

Earlier this week, German news outlet Correctiv reported, based on its investigation, that Russia and the US were close to negotiating a significant deal that would enable the resumption of Russian energy exports. These talks, which have been ongoing for several months, might involve American companies acquiring portions of the Nord Stream pipeline infrastructure and stakes in three German refineries owned by Rosneft, a subsidiary of the Russian energy giant.

So far, neither the Kremlin nor the White House have officially commented on these reports. On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia could resume gas exports to Europe through the undersea pipeline once an agreement on energy cooperation is reached with Washington.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, designed to transport Russian gas to Germany and Western Europe, were damaged by explosions at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in September 2022.
