The UK is set to introduce its “largest ever” sanctions package against Russia ahead of the third anniversary of the Ukraine conflict, according to Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
“This is also the time to turn the screws on Putin’s Russia,” Lammy stated in a Sunday announcement. “Tomorrow, I plan to announce the largest package of sanctions against Russia since the early days of the war – eroding their military machine and reducing revenues fueling the fires of destruction in Ukraine.”
He emphasized that the new restrictions would be revealed during a “critical moment” for Ukraine. “We remain committed to providing £3 billion of military support a year to put Ukraine in the strongest position possible,” he remarked. Lammy further expressed that he is “ready and willing” to contribute troops as part of peacekeeping forces if needed.
Since the conflict began in 2022, the UK has implemented several rounds of sanctions on Russia, affecting 1,900 individuals and organizations alongside key industries and energy exports.
In reference to US President Donald Trump’s decision to engage in direct discussions with Russia, Lammy underscored that “there can be nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to visit Washington this week to encourage Trump not to discontinue military aid to Kiev and to consider a potential peacekeeping mission. The Wall Street Journal has reported that London and Paris have agreed to send 30,000 troops to Ukraine, although this initiative may encounter significant challenges without Trump’s backing.
Trump has reversed the Biden administration’s strategy of “isolating” Russia, which has caused frustration among Ukrainian and EU officials due to his arrangements for talks with Russia without their consent.
On Friday, Trump asserted that Macron and Starmer “haven’t done anything.” He has previously accused Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky of being “a dictator” and blamed him for instigating the conflict with Russia, even questioning whether Zelensky should participate in future negotiations.
“I don’t think he’s very important to be in meetings,” Trump said on Friday, insisting that Zelensky “has no cards” in the negotiations.
Russia has warned in the past that no Western sanctions would deter its troops, stating it would see any foreign troops without a UN peacekeeping mandate as legitimate military targets.
