The Chinese video game "Black Myth: Wukong" has broken sales records, reaching an extraordinary 20 million copies sold on Steam and generating upwards of $961 million in revenue since its release last month. This achievement places the game at the top of the sales charts for China's domestic AAA games, as reported by the data analytics firm VideoGame Insights.

Apart from Steam, "Black Myth: Wukong" is also marketed on WeGame, PlayStation, and Epic platforms. Given the robust sales out of the gate, industry experts are forecasting annual sales figures to potentially hit between 30 to 40 million copies.

The game, developed by Game Science, emerged as an overnight sensation in the gaming community, largely owing to its status as the first AAA title developed in China. Within just an hour of its release, it clinched the top spot on Steam’s "most-played games" list and sold over 10 million copies across all platforms by August 23, mere days after its debut.

"Black Myth: Wukong" underwent a six-year development period with an investment exceeding 400 million yuan, marking a substantial financial commitment to its creation. The game not only represents a milestone in AAA title development in China but also underscores the expanding global reach of Chinese culture through video games.

Rooted in the iconic Chinese novel "Journey to the West," "Black Myth: Wukong" tells the tale of a monk and his three disciples. It prominently features the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, celebrated for his magical prowess and playful demeanor. The cultural impact of "Journey to the West" is profound, influencing multiple forms of media across East Asia and now extending into the realm of gaming.

The rise in gaming culture globally is typically fueled by elements of curiosity and mystery, as explained by Yu Ranxing, co-founder of Game Science. "We hope to show that Chinese games can also achieve world-class standards through our efforts," Yu commented.

Yu also discussed the evolving nature of China’s gaming market, describing the industry’s growth and diversification as an "unprecedented opportunity." China is currently the largest gaming market globally, with its revenues surpassing 300 billion yuan in 2023. Recent reports for the first half of 2024 show that domestic gaming market revenue has grown to 147.3 billion yuan, a 2.08 percent increase year over year. Additionally, the number of gaming users in China has reached a historic peak of 674 million.
