Biden was concerned that 'radical' Ukrainians might kill him in Kiev
The outgoing US leader alluded to an unannounced trip he made to Kiev in 2023.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden disclosed that he feared for his life due to potential assassination threats from Ukrainian radicals during his visit to Kiev in 2023. This information was shared during an interview with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, which aired on Friday.

Biden's unannounced trip to Kiev took place in February 2023, roughly a year after the conflict with Russia intensified. It was later revealed that the visit had been meticulously planned over several months by a select group of Biden’s top aides, with contributions from the Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence agencies.

In the interview, Biden noted that he had received warnings regarding the risk of an assassination attempt during his trip. He emphasized that these threats did not originate from Moscow, but rather from “radical elements within Ukraine,” suggesting a possible link to the Russian government.

“Everybody kind of [advised me not to go] for security reasons... But I didn’t think Putin would dare to eliminate the American president,” Biden remarked.

He further elaborated, “I was worried, concerned about what a radical element within Ukraine that was under the control or working with the Russians might try to do,” explaining that this concern was part of the rationale for keeping the trip secret.

The visit was marked by detailed coordination and enhanced security. Biden's journey involved a discreet departure by plane from Washington, DC, followed by a nearly ten-hour train ride from Poland to Kiev. National security adviser Jake Sullivan later disclosed that Washington notified Moscow of Biden’s visit only hours before he was set to leave.

During his time in Kiev, Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, announcing an additional half billion dollars in aid and pledging new sanctions against Russia. Biden characterized the trip as “important” for illustrating Washington’s support for Ukraine.

“I thought it was important that we demonstrate to the rest of the European leaders, stand up, man… My concern was if we didn’t go, then who leads? What happens?” he expressed.

At that time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that the visit likely exemplified “concentrated Russophobia.” The Russian government has consistently criticized US involvement in the conflict, stating multiple times that support for Kiev merely extends the hostilities and leads to more death and destruction.
