Over half of Greenland's population favors joining the US, according to survey
According to a recent study, approximately 37% of individuals outright reject Donald Trump’s idea of acquiring Greenland from Denmark.

The survey indicates that around 57.3% of Greenland's population is in favor of the proposal to make the island an American territory, as reported by US research firm Patriot Polling.

The rejection rate of Trump's proposal is recorded at 37.4%, with 5.3% of respondents remaining undecided. “Our survey finds that a substantial majority of Greenlandic residents support joining the US,” stated the pollster.

Patriot Polling conducted the survey with 416 respondents in Greenland from January 6 to 11, coinciding with Donald Trump Jr.'s visit to the Danish autonomous territory. Notably, this was the company’s first polling endeavor outside the United States.

Trump previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland during his first term and has revisited the topic recently. At a press conference last Tuesday, he did not dismiss the possibility of using force to assert control over the world’s largest island, adding, “It might be that you will have to do something… We need Greenland for national security purposes.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede made it clear on Friday that the island “...is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American.” He emphasized the desire for independence, indicating that a vote on the matter "will come soon."

Nevertheless, Egede expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with Trump and noted the importance of maintaining cooperation with the US moving forward.

In 2008, Greenland conducted a non-binding referendum regarding increased autonomy from Denmark, which yielded a 75% approval rating from voters and a turnout rate of 72%. This event led to the enactment of the 2009 Self-Government Act, which afforded the island more authority over its internal affairs.

Covering an area of 2.2 million square kilometers, Greenland is inhabited by fewer than 57,000 residents and is 80% ice-covered. The island is abundant in natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, and uranium, and it is thought to possess significant oil reserves within its territorial waters.
