Antisemitism watchdog criticizes Musk for joke filled with Nazi puns
A leading watchdog against antisemitism has criticized tech billionaire Elon Musk for appearing to trivialize the Holocaust after he mocked his critics in a social media post using Nazi puns.

On Monday, the owner of SpaceX, Tesla, and X sparked controversy when he emotionally extended his right hand during a speech on Trump’s Inauguration Day. While some responded to the gesture with humorous memes, others interpreted it as a Nazi salute.

Musk attributed the backlash to “radical leftists.” On Thursday, he shared a satirical post on X that included references to prominent figures from Nazi Germany, stating, “Don’t say Hess to Nazi accusations! Some people will Goebbels anything down! Stop Goering your enemies!” and “His pronouns would’ve been He/Himmler! Bet you did nazi that coming.”

In response, podcaster Dave Rubin commented on Musk’s post, saying: “Humor is the fascist way to defeat these people!” to which Musk replied, “They can’t stand being mocked.”

The Anti-Defamation League swiftly condemned Musk's actions, with CEO Jonathan Greenblatt stating on X, “We’ve said it hundreds of times before and we will say it again: the Holocaust was a singularly evil event, and it is inappropriate and offensive to make light of it.”

In another statement, the ADL emphasized, “making inappropriate and highly offensive jokes that trivialize the Holocaust only serve to minimize the evil and inhumanity of Nazi crimes, denigrate the suffering of both victims and survivors, and insult the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Shoah.”

Previously, the Jewish advocacy organization had defended Musk, claiming he made “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also spoken in Musk’s defense, calling him “a great friend of Israel” who is being “falsely smeared.”

Following the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which sparked the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Musk visited Israel. In January 2024, he went to the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland, where he laid a wreath and took part in a memorial service, according to the BBC.
