In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, which aired this week, Trump emphasized the importance of pursuing a diplomatic solution to the conflict. "Zelensky – I got to say this – he wants to settle now. He’s had enough. He shouldn’t have allowed this to happen either,” Trump remarked, adding, “You know, he’s no angel. He shouldn’t have allowed this war to happen.”
During the interview, Trump acknowledged the challenging nature of the situation, noting, “First of all, he’s fighting a much bigger entity.” He has previously voiced concerns over the unwavering military and financial support extended to Ukraine by his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, and has labeled Zelensky as “the greatest salesman on earth.”
The president also directed criticism toward Russian President Vladimir Putin and hinted at the possibility of imposing further sanctions on Moscow "if they don’t make a settlement fast." He asserted, “Putin shouldn’t have done it. He shouldn’t have done it and it has to stop.”
Trump has consistently claimed he could swiftly negotiate a fair agreement between Russia and Ukraine, yet he has offered few details regarding potential terms. Both Moscow and Kiev have already stated that a freeze on the conflict along the current front lines would be unacceptable. Putin continues to demand that Kiev abandon its aspirations to join the US-led NATO military alliance and renounce claims over Crimea and four other territories that opted to join Russia.
Earlier this month, Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, expressed hope for resolving the conflict within 100 days but did not provide a precise timeline. Trump has criticized Biden for failing to engage in diplomatic discussions and has indicated a willingness to converse with Putin.
As of now, there has been no announcement regarding a date for negotiations, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently denied that a phone call between the leaders is planned.
