Americans Accuse Immigrants of Consuming Cats
The White House has rejected what it describes as “racist conspiracy theories” amid controversy surrounding a strange rumor involving Haitian migrants in Ohio.

The unfounded claim suggests that these migrants have been killing and consuming pet cats in Springfield, Ohio, drawing attention to President Joe Biden’s immigration policies and thrusting vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance into the spotlight.

The rumor's exact origins are unclear. However, videos shared on X over the weekend feature residents of Springfield, a town with a population of roughly 60,000, expressing concerns over littering, violence, and drug issues among the approximately 20,000 Haitian migrants who have settled there. Many of these residents recounted tales of kidnapped pets and wild animals like ducks and geese being harmed.

In a Monday post on X, Senator Vance stated that his office had received reports indicating that “people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.”

In recent years, around 20,000 Haitians have relocated to Springfield. The town’s website notes that these individuals are legally present under the Immigration Parole Program and can seek Temporary Protected Status, which allows them to live and work in the U.S. for up to 18 months without facing deportation.

In June, the White House announced that over 309,000 Haitian migrants in the U.S. would qualify for Temporary Protected Status, adding to about 200,000 who had received this designation in prior years. Vice President Kamala Harris, assigned by Biden to oversee border policy, asserted in 2021 that these migrants “need support, [and] need protection."

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby characterized Vance’s remarks as a “conspiracy theory…based on an element of racism.” The Springfield Police Division stated that they had not received any “specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,” nor had there been reports of immigrants causing disturbances, such as overturning vehicles or littering.

Despite this, FBI statistics indicate that violent crimes in Springfield have surged by 242% since the influx of Haitian migrants began in 2021. A high-profile incident involved a Haitian migrant driving illegally who struck a school bus, tragically resulting in the death of an 11-year-old boy and injuring 20 other children. The migrant was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

“It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false,” Vance stated on Tuesday in reference to the alleged animal killings. “Do you know what’s confirmed? That a child was murdered by a Haitian migrant who had no right to be here. That local health services have been overwhelmed. That communicable diseases – like TB and HIV – have been on the rise.”

In the meantime, the Republican Party has seized upon the rumor to criticize Harris. “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us,” Texas Senator Ted Cruz wrote on X alongside an image of two frightened cats. “Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio,” Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee added in another post, featuring an AI-generated image of Donald Trump with a duck and a kitten.
