All of Europe Engages in Trade with Russia – Hungary
Numerous European Union companies maintain covert commercial relationships with Russia, despite the sanctions in place, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

“Here I would like to disappoint the idealists, as the situation is that everyone in Europe is doing this,” Szijjarto stated during an address in Budapest. “The difference between us and the others in general is that we speak honestly and openly about this issue. All of Europe does business with the Russians, but some deny this; we don’t need that.”

Szijjarto also shared that although Hungary opposes the sanctions, it adheres to them as they represent EU policy. He noted that Hungary often opposes certain EU measures that could significantly damage its national interests. He mentioned that bolstering economic partnerships with Russia is among these interests.

The EU initially set sanctions on Moscow back in 2014, intensifying them following the worsening of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. These sanctions primarily affect Russia's key economic sectors such as energy, finance, and commerce.

Hungary's disagreement with the EU's stance on Ukraine and the sanctions against Moscow complicates the EU's ability to uniformly enforce new sanctions, as reported by Euractiv citing diplomatic sources.

Many analysts from Russia and Western countries have suggested that such unilateral sanctions might cause more detriment to the imposing nations than to Russia. Furthermore, EU officials have noted Russia's effective measures in mitigating the impact of these sanctions. Data from the Russian Finance Ministry revealed a notable 73.5% increase in oil and gas revenue in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
