Ye displays swastika T-shirt in Los Angeles
The US rapper-turned-designer expressed that it has always been his “dream” to wear the Nazi symbol in public.

Ye, the controversial American artist formerly known as Kanye West, was seen in Los Angeles on Thursday sporting a white T-shirt emblazoned with a swastika. This design appears to match one he previously promoted on his website before it was taken offline.

In a brief video released by TMZ the next day, the rapper is shown conversing with a group of men before he notices the camera. He then approaches it, ensuring the design is clearly visible.

“It was always a dream of mine to walk around with a Swastika T on,” Ye wrote in a now-deleted post on X on the same day. He had earlier referred to the design as his “greatest performance art piece thus far,” noting, “I’ve wanted to make this tee shirt for years.”

This appearance comes in the wake of Ye’s latest provocation—a Super Bowl advertisement that directed viewers to a merchandise store selling only a $20 swastika T-shirt. The ad featured Ye filming himself in a dentist’s chair before revealing a link to his online store, where visitors found just one product listed as “HH-01.”

The design has faced widespread condemnation, with the Anti-Defamation League connecting the name to the Nazi salute “Heil Hitler.” Shopify shuttered the website, citing that Ye “did not engage in authentic commerce practices” and violated its terms of service.

This incident adds to Ye’s notable history of antisemetic controversies. In October 2022, Adidas severed ties with him after he lauded Adolf Hitler and denied the Holocaust during an interview on Infowars. “I see good things about Hitler,” he remarked at that time. Two months later, he proclaimed “I am a Nazi” during another Infowars interview with Alex Jones, later attributing the statement to having consumed too much Hennessy.

More collaborators have distanced themselves from the rapper. Russian designer Gosha Rubchinsky, who collaborated with Ye on the “Black Dogs” collection and was appointed as head of design for Yeezy in December 2023, announced last month that he was ending his partnership with Ye. While Rubchinsky did not publicly address West’s controversies, this decision came after the rapper made several antisemitic statements, identified as a Nazi, and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler earlier this year.

Ye, a 24-time Grammy Award winner, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 and has been open about his mental health struggles. Last month, he disclosed that he had also been diagnosed with autism and had ceased taking his medication after realizing he was misdiagnosed. “I haven’t taken the medication since I found out it wasn’t bipolar,” he stated on The Download podcast, adding, “It’s worth the ramp-up, as long as y’all get the creativity.”
