Hungarian FM Says Trump-Zelensky Dispute Reveals Who is for Peace and Who Isn’t
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has stated that the clash between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky demonstrates that, unlike Washington, Kiev is not interested in resolving its conflict with Moscow.

Zelensky’s recent trip to the White House ended abruptly after tensions escalated during a meeting with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, resulting in a shouting match that occurred in front of the media. Trump and J.D. Vance criticized the Ukrainian leader for “gambling with World War III” due to his reluctance to engage in peace negotiations with Russia. They accused him of being disrespectful and ungrateful for the significant military support that the U.S. has provided to Ukraine.

The visit aimed to finalize an agreement regarding minerals between the U.S. and Ukraine, but it was never completed, as Zelensky sought security assurances and increased involvement from the Trump administration in the ongoing conflict.

Szijjarto commented on the situation in a Facebook post, noting, “It became clearer to everyone than ever before who wants peace and who wants war; who wants to stop the killing and who wants to continue it; who stands on the grounds of common sense and who does not care for either human lives or billions of wasted euros.” He referred to the encounter at the Oval Office, which U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled a “fiasco,” and specifically indicated that it is Zelensky who desires for “the war to just continue.”

He characterized Trump’s commitment to peace as “the greatest moment of the past three years.” During their exchange, Trump informed Zelensky that Ukraine was “running out of soldiers” and had little leverage in the situation with Russia. He advised, “Look, if you could get a ceasefire right now, I tell you, you take it, so the bullets stop flying and your men stop getting killed.”

Szijjarto emphasized that the Hungarian authorities have consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, expressing hope that “Trump will make the US-Russian negotiations a success, because only a US-Russian agreement can bring peace back to our beloved Central Europe.”

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, described Zelensky’s trip to the U.S. as “a diplomatic and political failure” for the Kiev administration. She criticized the Ukrainian leader for his “outrageously boorish behavior” at the White House, asserting that he confirmed his status as “an irresponsible instigator of a major war” and “a most dangerous threat to the international community,” as she remarked on Telegram.

Zakharova reiterated Moscow’s position that enduring peace can only be established “when the root causes of the conflict are fully eliminated.”
