Xi pledges certain reunification with Taiwan
In his New Year address to the nation, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the significance of the One-China principle concerning Taiwan, asserting that reunification with the island is an inevitable process.

Taiwan has operated under self-rule since nationalist forces established control there after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War in 1949. A limited number of countries recognize Taiwan as an independent entity, while most, including Russia, align with Beijing’s view that the territory is part of China.

“The compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. No one can break our family bonds, and no one can stop the historical trend of national reunification of the motherland,” Xi declared in a televised speech. He emphasized that the reunification process is unavoidable, urging individuals on both sides to “be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

Although the United States officially upholds the One-China policy, acknowledging Taiwan as part of China, it simultaneously engages in military cooperation with Taipei, which has drawn ire from Beijing. The Chinese government has consistently criticized U.S. arms sales to Taipei, accusing Washington of escalating tensions in the region.

Recently, China has conducted multiple large-scale military exercises. In a previous statement, Xi highlighted the Taiwan issue as a crucial boundary that the United States must respect to maintain an equitable relationship between Washington and Beijing.

China’s Foreign Ministry has asserted that U.S. support for Taiwan contravenes commitments made in the August 17 Communiqué of 1982, where Washington vowed not to pursue a long-term arms sales policy to Taiwan and expressed an intention to gradually decrease such sales.
