Xi Offers Congratulations to Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations to US President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory, urging the two nations to focus on shared interests, as reported by Xinhua on Thursday.

In his victory speech delivered early Wednesday, Trump committed to “stop wars” and initiate a new era of prosperity for the United States. However, various media sources have raised alarms regarding the prospect of a US-China trade war reminiscent of the initial period of Trump's presidency.

On Thursday, Xi acknowledged Trump’s electoral success, highlighting that history illustrates the benefits of cooperation between China and the US, while confrontation yields losses, according to Xinhua. Although several sources indicated that the two leaders had a phone conversation, Chinese officials later clarified that Xi's congratulations were sent via message.

Xi emphasized that a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship between the two nations aligns with their mutual interests and the expectations of the international community. He expressed hope that the US and China would maintain mutual respect, foster cooperative relationships, and strive for peaceful coexistence by enhancing dialogue and effectively addressing their differences.

During his campaign, Trump had promised to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, and the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden has already enacted protectionist policies against Chinese products. In September, the US announced significant tariff increases, raising duties on imported Chinese electric vehicles to 100% and on semiconductors to 50%, among other goods.

World leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, have congratulated Trump on his victory over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.

In related news, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that he was unsure whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would reach out to Trump. Peskov characterized the current relations between Moscow and Washington as being “at the lowest point in history” and referred to the US as an “unfriendly country that is both directly and indirectly involved in the war against our state.”
