Sai Varshith Kandula, a national from India living in Missouri, expressed a desire to “attack and destroy” the US government. Following the collision, the 19-year-old exited the vehicle, retrieved a flag featuring a Nazi swastika from a backpack, and was subsequently detained at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.
The prosecution highlighted that Kandula aimed to “eliminate the democratic process in America and replace the government with a Nazi-style dictatorship” and had intentions to kill the US president. “He specifically praised Adolf Hitler,” the prosecution noted.
Although no weapons or ammunition were recovered from Kandula, the prosecution argued that an attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump at a rally in July demonstrated that “individuals who carry such destructive intent are capable of inflicting serious damage to the American political system.”
In May, Kandula pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury or depredation of US property. In addition to his prison sentence, the judge mandated three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
Kandula, who was born in Chandanagar, India, was a lawful permanent resident with a green card. After his arrest, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which the sentencing memorandum indicated “led directly to his offense.”
“He’s amenable to treatment, understands its necessity, and recognizes an illness produced the acts that led to his current circumstances,” defense attorney Scott Rosenblum told the Associated Press.
This conviction is expected to lead to Kandula's deportation.
There have been other instances of attacks in the US motivated by Nazi ideology. In May 2022, a shooting in Buffalo, New York, resulted in ten deaths, with the shooter holding white supremacist beliefs and showcasing Nazi symbols.
In August 2019, a 21-year-old man opened fire in a Walmart, killing 23 individuals. This assailant had written a manifesto expressing support for white nationalist and neo-Nazi ideologies, specifically targeting Hispanic individuals in what he referred to as a response to the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”
