Washington Says It's Time to End the Gaza War
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asserted that Israel has accomplished its objectives concerning the Palestinian militant group Hamas and should now consider ending its military actions in Gaza.

Following an incursion by Hamas into southern Israel that resulted in around 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of over 250 hostages, Israel besieged the Palestinian enclave in October 2023. Reports indicate that at least 43,000 people have died amid the intense bombing and ground invasion by the Israel Defense Forces, with nearly 70% of the UN-verified fatalities being women and children, according to the Human Rights Office.

“[Israel] said that it needed to dismantle the military organization of Hamas and to get the leadership that was responsible for October 7th,” Blinken stated to reporters in Brussels. “It’s done both of those things. So this should be a time to end the war,” he continued, following a meeting with Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.

Blinken emphasized that even if Israel remains reluctant to withdraw its troops, it is essential for the country to fulfill its humanitarian responsibilities. He indicated that should Israel comply, Washington has a plan in place to ensure “that Hamas is not going back in.”

Recently, Qatar announced it had halted its US-backed mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel, stating that it will not engage unless both parties demonstrate a commitment to ending the "brutal war," according to its foreign ministry.

Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant allegedly remarked during a private discussion with families of hostages that the IDF has “nothing left to do in Gaza.” Sources quoted him saying that Israel's continued presence in the enclave is driven by “a desire to be there.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Gallant the following Tuesday, citing a “breach of trust.”

The left-leaning newspaper Haaretz has accused Netanyahu of pursuing an “ethnic cleansing” of Gaza, asserting that he is “responsible for the war crimes committed by the IDF… the expulsion of the Palestinians, the destruction of their homes and the preparations on the ground for a prolonged occupation and Jewish settlement,” in an editorial published last Sunday.

Additionally, the ongoing Gaza operations have prompted Israel to engage in military actions in Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah, with the Health Ministry reporting that the death toll in this parallel conflict has climbed to 3,287 since October of the previous year.
