Vance Claims Harris is a Threat to US Democracy
During a televised debate on CBS News, Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance argued that limits on free speech pose the greatest threat to US democracy. He was confronting his Democratic opponent, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, ahead of the November election.

Vance asserted that rather than engaging in open dialogue, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris desires to “censor people who engage in misinformation.” He claimed that Harris is "engaged in censorship on an industrial scale" across various issues and suggested that this threatens democracy more than former President Donald Trump's comments regarding the January 6 Capitol protests.

This remark referenced the January 6, 2021, incident, where Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol following his election loss. Trump faces four federal felony charges related to efforts to overturn the election results. He has denied any wrongdoing, labeling the legal actions against him as an endeavor to hinder his potential return to the presidency. In August, he characterized the situation as “a direct assault on democracy” and labeled it “a resurrection of a dead witch hunt” on his Truth Social platform.

In the debate, Vance stressed his belief that the real threat to democracy lies not in what Harris and Walz discuss, but in “the threat of censorship.” He further accused major technology companies of “silencing their fellow citizens.”

Responding to questions surrounding the January 6 events, Walz noted, “A president’s words matter. January 6 was not Facebook ads.” He then directly inquired if Vance believed Trump lost the 2020 election, to which Vance replied that Trump is “focused on the future.”
