The CBS affiliate in Milwaukee has parted ways with weather presenter Sam Kuffel, who allegedly referred to Elon Musk as a Nazi on social media. Musk, a close associate of former US President Donald Trump, has denied allegations that he performed a Nazi salute during an inauguration rally, labeling the claim as a “dirty trick” by his detractors.
WDJT-TV, where Kuffel had been employed since 2019, confirmed her departure but provided no specific reason in its internal memo or public statements, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The station described the situation as a “personal issue.” Kuffel's dismissal reportedly occurred just one day after she made her comments regarding Musk's gesture on her Instagram account.
Following her departure, the TV station removed Kuffel’s biography from its website and no longer features her in the weather segment, although her previously published articles remain accessible. While her Instagram account is now private, screenshots of her posts have circulated online. She has not yet publicly addressed the situation.
Before joining WDJT-TV, Kuffel was employed at WAOW-TV in Wausau and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in atmospheric science.
Musk's gesture, which occurred during a speech at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, during Trump's inauguration, has sparked backlash from some Democrats, who allege it resembled a Nazi salute. Musk has rejected this interpretation, urging his critics to seek more constructive criticisms rather than branding "everyone Hitler."
The Anti-Defamation League, a US-based pro-Israel organization that monitors anti-Semitism and hate speech, deemed Musk’s gesture “awkward” but refrained from labeling it a Nazi salute.
