US Judge Halts Trump's Order on Birthright Citizenship
A US federal judge in Seattle has put a two-week halt on President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship. Judge John Coughenour described the action as “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The executive order, which Trump signed right after his inauguration on January 20, intended to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent is a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.

The decree has faced significant opposition from Democrats and human rights advocates. Over 20 states led by Democrats, along with the District of Columbia and San Francisco, have filed lawsuits in Boston and Seattle, asserting that Trump breached the US Constitution. Immigrant and civil rights organizations, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, have also initiated legal action in New Hampshire.

The restraining order requested by states including Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington was the first to receive a hearing in court, with the ruling having nationwide implications.

According to the Associated Press, during the hearing, the judge frequently interrupted Justice Department attorney Brett Shumate, questioning the legality of Trump’s executive order.

“This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,” Coughenour remarked, noting that he couldn’t recall another case in his lengthy career in which the Constitution was so overtly violated.

The Justice Department responded with a statement indicating it would “vigorously defend” Trump’s order, asserting it “correctly” interprets the Constitution.

“We look forward to presenting a full merits argument to the court and to the American people, who are desperate to see our nation’s laws enforced,” the statement added.

This order forms part of a wider set of ‘America First’ policies introduced by Trump following his inauguration. The president has directed government agencies to intensify efforts against illegal immigration and organized crime, pledging to safeguard Americans from what he describes as an “invasion” at the southern border. Trump has classified drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and ordered additional troop deployments to assist border agents in managing the influx of migrants.

In his first interview after taking office, Trump stated that “thousands” of terrorists have gained entry into the country and accused Venezuela of “moving” criminal gangs to the US.
